Joseph J. Duffy is a founding principal of Stetler & Duffy,
Ltd. Previously, Mr. Duffy was a partner in the Chicago firm of
Schiff Hardin & Waite, where he headed the firm’s white collar
practice group from 1989 until March, 1998 when he founded
Stetler & Duffy, Ltd. Mr. Duffy is an experienced trial lawyer
with 25 years experience in white collar and business
litigation. His practice is primarily concentrated in the
defense of white collar matters as well as complex commercial
litigation. He handles all aspects of federal and state
criminal prosecutions through the investigative, prosecutive,
and appellate stages. Mr. Duffy has extensive expertise
counseling corporations and assisting management in internal
investigations and governmental investigations.
Mr. Duffy served in the United States
Attorneys Office for the Northern District of Illinois from
1980-1989. As Assistant U.S. Attorney, he investigated and
prosecuted complex financial crimes and public corruption
cases. He was appointed Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division,
Chief of the Criminal Division, and later First Assistant U.S.
Attorney with responsibilities for criminal prosecutions in the
Northern District of Illinois. He is the recipient of the
Attorney General’s John Marshall Award for Outstanding Legal
Achievement.
Since entering private practice, Mr. Duffy
has defended numerous entities and individuals in government
investigations as well in civil and criminal jury trials, and
appeals. He successfully represented clients in matters
involving health care, anti-trust, defense procurement, foreign
corrupt practices, securities, environmental, public corruption,
and taxation matters.
Mr. Duffy is listed in The Best Lawyers
in America and The Guide to the World’s Leading White
Collar Crime Lawyers. Mr. Duffy is a fellow of the American
College of trial lawyers. He has previously served on the
faculty of John Marshall Law School, where he taught Trial
Advocacy. He has also taught at the U.S. Attorney General’s
Advocacy Institute and the F.B.I. Academy Quantico, Virginia.
Mr. Duffy received his undergraduate degree in 1973 and his law
degree in 1979 from John Marshall Law School.
